Another composer who has borrowed from his own work, to be more specific, Michael Kamen has taken his orchestral music to the fine cable series From the Earth to the Moon and rehashed the score to the work we have here. Its basically the same music, nothing original.
*sigh*

It wasn’t Michael Kamen who wrote the Requiem of a Soldier song. It was written originally by Amici Forever Opera for the Band of Brothers producers, by request. I think it is sad that they are putting Michael Kamen’s name on this, letting him take credit for Amici’s fine work.

Band of Brothers was, for the most part (ten parts, bound to be flawed here and there), a terrific miniseries with a memorable cast, stunning battle scenes, and occasionally powerful drama. If you’re into war films, be sure to catch it sometime. Michael Kamen’s score, however, is of a slightly different case. There’s no doubt in my mind the man tried his hardest to compose a score worthy of the series’ material. What he comes up with is a pretty enjoyable listen, but after hearing the material repeated so many times, the emotions sort of run dry and the main theme sounds like an uneven mixture of heroism and schmaltz. For sorrowful, somber music done right, I much prefer John Williams’ work for Saving Private Ryan.

This disc is great, varying between the emotional lows of trench life, to the *glory* and fulfillment of fighting for your country. It’s slow, boring, and at points, lifeless. Yet, when you take off your headphones, you feel somehow refreshed, inspired. To some, it will sound completely rubbish, if they’re not used to this kind of soundtrack. The first 3 tracks are glorious, with their broad swoops of low strings. The rest of the disc is a bit depressing, even morbid at times, yet it never fails to make an impression. It’s in the same vein as The Thin Red Line by Hans Zimmer (Incredible soundtrack!), yet it doesn’t quite make it to that level. The Main theme is great, but I don’t feel that Kamen stuck with it enough. There were spots where the music felt a bit empty, and a variation of the theme would have filled things in a bit. Also, he would have done well to use vocals more. They’re there, in the background, but it doesn’t have the strength of, say, Glory (not all that good, but you get my point). Vocals can make or break a soundtrack, so use it well, or not at all. Over all, the album is awesome, with only a few points keeping it from getting five stars. Tell you what, if you like slow, inspirational music, yet don’t get Band of Brothers and The Thin Red Line, I’m going to come by your house and break your legs. Buy it now, darn you.

This soundtrack is, without a doubt, the best soundtrack to become available since Gladiator. And for a TV program, especially a miniseries, this has EXCELLENT music and emotional quality to it. Some of the best tracks are 1, 2, and 3. The only downside to this score is that it is somewhat typical of today’s instrumental, specifically involving choral numbers, scores. There’s just not a whole lot difference in this score from anything else, unless you count the beautiful, haunting “Plaisir D’Amour,” which very aptly uses a chorale. Aside from this, it is a VERY good soundtrack and well worth picking up. The only way this soundtrack could be ruined would be for it to be completely misused in the actual series.
