I have the newest version of the Jesus Christ Superstar performance with Glenn Carter, and I must say that it’s exceptionally better. Even though it lacks “This Jesus Must Die” and a couple of other songs (which by the way I’m very mad about!), Mary Magdalene played by Renee Castle does SUCH a better job than the MM from the 1973 version! Talk about one huge yawn! Also, Ted Neely looks possessed in this film. Sorry, but Glenn is so believable and Ted is just plain scary to me! I think that the newer version is all around improved, and after seeing both films, let’s just say that a newer version was quite in need. I admire the originality of this film, but the 2000 version is much better.

If I could, I would give this recording 2 and a half stars, but that option isn’t available. 2 stars seems too low and yet three stars seems too high. This Jesus Christ Superstar (of the many) is the 1973 movie soundtrack. Bluntly, it kinda [stinks] Like the some of the other reviewers, I admire the originality of it, becuase Norman Jewison is an excellent director, but many things are wrong with it. First of all, there was absolutely no need to add EXTRA “dramatic” music to the score. And absolutely no reason at all to add the stupid, boring song “We Are Decided”, which can only be found on this movie recording (as evidence that everybody else thought the song [stunk] too). Ted Neeley as Jesus is raspy, doesn’t have that great of a voice, doesn’t take many risks with his voice and talks his lines way too much. And the sound quality of this recording is just terrible. It sounds like everything is through a tin can covered by a sock. The original Broadway version from 1972 has better sound quality (though not better over all). Peter, though a very small role, didn’t give any emotion to the music at all and just kinda sings it, and not all that well at that. Some songs just lack all emotion and sound really BAD. Such as “Trial Before Pilate”, “Peter’s Denial”, and “Then We Are Decided”. But there are some good things to this (thus earning it it’s three stars). Carl Anderson as Judas is just awesome! He really doesn’t deserve to be in this recording. He deserves to be in better. His intensity gives so much life to the role and his voice is just awesome. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like he even struggles with notes like high B’s. Yvonne Elliman is a nice, neutral Mary. Though not all that emotional, a good mix of everything. Barry Dennen wasn’t as good as he usually is as Pilate, and was kinda weird in this reording (he is also Pilate in the concept album, 1970, and the original Broadway, 1972). Larry T. Marshall as Simon is hysterical in the movie, and that kinda comes across in the music, so he is an okay choice. Overall, though, it isn’t one that I really can enjoy all that much. If you are looking for a good example of 70’s music in theatre and stuff, this is a good recording. Buit don’t judge the wonderful musical Jesus Christ Superstar by this recording. It has no “umph” to it besides the wonderful Judas. But he alone cannot save this.

This is an awsome ‘hard rock’ opera about the last 7 days of Jesus Christ’s life - written by the best composer - Andrew Lloyd Webber. But some things are wrong about this recording. First of all- the instruments. They are flat (elec. Guitars). The chorus could not keep tune. Now the singers: Jesus: has an American _ Texan accent which is not like Jesus , does not have enough energy to sing , and sometimes sounds like a girl. Judas: this guy is one of the best Judas’. His vocals are good and can emphizaze. Mary M.: sounds like a baby crying. Pilate: sounds like a girl and at the end of the trail he sounds like a person with no vocal chords. Herod: sounds like a gay man with no energy. But he is funny. Caiphas: He is the best one. He can sing low and sings like he supposed to. In concl. : I reccomend the 1996 London Cast recording of JCS.

I am not sure which is worse: the atricious sound quality of this version of the soundtrack or Ted Neely. Let me just say that I am a huge fan of JCS. Huge. If you truly enjoy the music, I’d strongly recommend purchasing the 1996 remastered version of the 1970 original album.

This version of the soundtrack sounds very flat. I agree with the reviewer who said they got better sound quality off of their old LP.

Ted Neely replaces (or tries to replace) a wholly superior Ian Gillan as Jesus. Neely screeches and over-emotes on virtually ever song. Gillan (the lead singer of Deep Purple) is a hard act to follow, and Neely just doesn’t cut it.
