I bought this CD in hopes of a decent musical romp…instead I was audibly assaulted by a rather hokey collection of so-called songs. From Nicole Kidman’s awful rendition of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” to the laughable hodgepodge called “The Elephant Love Medley”, the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack is one hysterical musical! How can one not laugh at the tango version of “Roxanne”? The only saving grace is “Lady Marmalade”. Don’t get me wrong, I love musicals and cheese…but not when it’s done this bad. Give me “Rocky Horror” any day.

At first glance, this looks like it could be a great CD. You’ve got new songs by David Bowie, Fatboy Slim, Bono, Beck, Rufus Wainwright, and Massive Attack. Sounds cool, right? Upon closer examination of the CD, you’ll notice songs by Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, and John Leguizamo. The last I heard, these three were actors–not musicians. This disc reconfirms that in no uncertain terms. It’s a classic example of the “looks good on paper, but don’t ever listen to this CD” syndrome. Sure, there’s some major talent here–the problem lies in the material.

Bowie redefines boring with his track, “Nature Boy,” and its reprise with Massive Attack is no better. Speaking of Bowie, Beck covered one of the great Bowie tunes, “Diamond Dogs.” I had been hearing about this track for months before its release and had high expectations for it. Unfortunately, Beck’s pseudo hip-hop take on the song is little more than interesting and not anything you need to hear more than once. The best track on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack is the cover of the T.Rex classic, “Children of the Revolution.”

Pop fans will love the ‘new’ Christina Aguilera track, “Lady Marmalade.” Anyone who’s heard the original version by LaBelle (whether they like it or not) will be lunging for the ‘next track’ button when this one comes on. Then there are the medleys. Once you hear these, you’ll be wondering how they ever made it onto the CD. The worst is the “Elephant Love Medley.” But wait–there’s more! How about “El Tango de Roxanne?” What was Sting thinking when he gave the OK for this? He can’t be that desperate for cash.

The bottom line is this–even if you’re a fan of any of the artists mentioned here, there’s no reason to waste your hard-earned money on this disc. Your worst enemies don’t deserve anything this bad.

First off “Lady Marmalade” by Labelle is better than this mix with Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, etc. Nicole Kidmans voice is weak at best.

The rest of this soundtrack is okay, not great. I do not know why this album is getting 5 star reviews?

The highlight of this is Ewan MacGregors voice, he can sing.

Other than that this CD is a bust, and shows after Billboard Debuting at No.5 last weeks falls to No.10 and sales are falling sharply….word is getting out.

Though the movie (which I haven’t seen) looks inviting and challenging, this soundtrack is weak, the only standout song is the “Elephant Medley” with Kidman and MacGregor singing love song mixes of Wings “Silly Love Songs”, u2s “Pride In the Name of Love”, Elton Johns “Your Song”, etc….a cute mix.

Other than that this is a miss.

Let’s face it, without “Lady Marmalade” this album would not be worth buying. In fact, who in their right mind would pay money to hear Nicole Kidman sing? Okay, that’s a little mean, I admit, but I’m just not a fan of this. So why would I give an album with one good song five stars? The good one is that good. Mya, Pink, Lil’ Kim and Christina (My voice brings down the house)Aguilera. I have to admit, Christina got a little carried away in this one, but with that voice, who cares? I think the song would have been really dull, however, without the edgy selection of singers- Lil’ Kim’s rap is so cool. Without it, the song wouldn’t really be different from the original, would it? Mya’s sweet, innocent voice draws you in, Pink gets you in the groove and all four end up turning you into Christina- trying vocals way out of your range, perhaps, but enjoying yourself right through the last high note. The song is TIGHT! (If you don’t like it, perhaps you’ll like the [stuff] on here, or perhaps you’ll hate it all. In the words of Pink “Do What U Do”)

Lady Marmalade Is The only good song on this album by the way the original version of the song is horrible Im glad they remade it because it sounds a lot better. However it resembles En Vogues “Free Your Mind.” Other than that this is not worth getting just try to get the song somewhere else.
